I just bought a 2000 corvette 6 speed and it will roll on a steep grade in first gear. The cylinder compression is between 170-180psi and the clutch is holding firm, not slipping. Is this normal for an LS1 6 speed?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car has 79,000 miles and is in great shape. The car was a one owner and driven most of the year in southern Ohio. Except for the heater fan making a little noise and the brakes needing changed this is the only concern I have. Engine is strong and runs very smooth and no smoke even under heavy acceleration.

Debbie- Yes, theis is normal, but you shouldn't be using your manual transmission to hold your car on a slope. Any manual transmission car will roll on you if the slope is steep enough . Unlike an automatic transmission which can hold you on a hill without damaging your car, on a manual you are putting excess stress on your drive system by using the transmission to hold your car on a hill. Use the emergency brake always and give the drivetrain a rest. It sounds like you got a real nice Corvette, Enjoy it. Good luck from Bovan.
