Asked by Wayne Dec 05, 2014 at 02:24 PM about the 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Fully charged battery will discharge
after a few days with nothing running
except the clock. I notice that all the
gauges on the dash show a reading
when the car is entered but key is
not in ignition. When key is inserted
and turned, the gauges return to '0'
readings.

From your description I would suspect a faulty ignition switch that is failing to shut everything off when it is in the off position, but that is only a guess. As always troubleshoot first, buy parts later, and always remember that free advice (like mine) is often worth exactly what you paid for it.
