!988 ford ranger 2.9 4x4 rough idle cold or warm. Changed plugs and wires checked for vacuum leaks could not find any. Just had transmission rebuilt.

Try checking the engine compression. Maybe you have burned valves or other problems from high miles.

Check IAC valve. Thats what controls airflow into the engine. Also check fuel pressure.
