low compression and overheats in less then 10 miles ,don't like going g up hills

When you start and let idle ,it isles then all most
dies then isles for 6 to 10 seconds then all most
dies  again ,when I put it in gear it acts like the
brakes on then it's 4 to 6 miles it overheats

Probably needs a rebuild, head gasket bad? or just simply so much wear on the engine NO / LOW compression? '85 is an antique vehicle in the state, I live in!. 31 years, not a bad for engine life.
