1989 f150 wiring

I have an 1989 f150. I replaced the wires going
from my negative battery terminal to a wire
harness going to the front end. The use to be a
connector right there that I switched out with one
that had smaller wires and a different connector. I
also replaced the starter. I have to fix part of the
ignition before I can use the key to start it so I
decided to jump the selinoid to check it. It was
trying to start but didn't and the wires that I
replaced started smoking. What could this be.

I can't see what your doing, but, as far as wires coming from battery, use the same size or larger. As far as chassis grounds, the most negative place is the generator bracket. Some generator brackets are a good size piece of metal, not hard to run a ground/s to that bracket. In the past on a newer vehicle than yours, the battery negative cable was buried part way down on front of engine, hard to get at. I moved the ground to the alternator bracket, easy to get at and worked just fine. Just my opinion.
