89 f150 302 no spark

Asked by Southernsoldier995 Dec 31, 2019 at 11:26 AM about the 1989 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat Standard Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 89 f150 with the 302. The trucl was
running fine not a single problem till about 3
weeks ago. Driving to work it died on me like it
was out of gas but still had power but would not
turn over. Now on the way it stuttered twice. I had
a coworker come and look at it with me and it
sounded like my battery was just not powerful
enough to start the truck anymore. So we jumped
it off of his dodge 3500 and we eventually got it
started. While running we disconnected the
battery and the truck died which to me would
indicate a faulty alternator. So we went and
replaced the alternator along with a new battery.
And it started fine. Drove to the jobsite and left it
to go do our work. When we returned truck started
fine on the first try. I then drove it to the gas
station and put more gas in and it wouldnt start
back up. No power, nothing. We tried jumping it of
again and we were getting power but the starter
would not spin. Even while beating on the starter it
would not spin. So we went and got a new starter
and installed it. Truck started first try afterward.
Driving home it did the same thing as on the way
to work where it died and still had power. It would
turnover but not crank. I have since replaced the
ignition coil, distributor pickup coil and the ignition
control module passed on ohm check as per the
Hanes ford manuel. I am at a loss! Please help!!!

Turning over is starter motor action. Your saying it cranks good but won't start? Make sure battery is good and has a full charge and all battery cables good, positive and negative, connections all good, all ends, not just at the battery. Note the diagram for starter motor. See the relay, that is usually mounted on fender lining. Two large threaded studs on relay, if you short across those two studs with screwdriver shank, the starter motor should crank the engine. If you try that, make sure transmission is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set. Make sure vehicle can't move. If I'm barking up the wrong tree as far as starter motor, my bad, your post is rather long. If no spark at the plugs, check primary voltage at the coil, key on, use test light. If no voltage backtrack the circuit, could be wiring circuit--fusible link problem--ignition switch--and so on. If no primary voltage, you might be able to use jumper wire from positive side of battery to positive side of coil, then check if you have spark? I'm sure I probably left something out?
