Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 89 F150 with the 5.0 and the
starter won’t Catch the flywheel it just
spins and before this happened I was
driving and when I would hit the gas
something made a grinding noise so I
put it in reverse grinding noise again
after parked it it sounds like the
starter won’t catch flywheel???

A broken tooth/teeth on the flywheel will do that. My Dad had same problem on one of his old trucks, but the starter would only spin when the wheel happened to stop at the right point, not all the time.

Same thing had a 1996 3/4 ton suburban that did that. The starter hadn't been engaging correctly and had ground off the top part of the teeth of the flywheel
