The check engine light glows with switch off and
key out on 1988 f150 . what could cause this ?

From an electrical standpoint, could be an issue with the ignition switch/cylinder, or a problem within the PCM/BCM if so equipped. Any good repair shop should have active scan capabilities to determine the problem.
