I have use a heavy gauge jumper wire a time or two to very the pump on my 86 Jetta. The pump runs a bit harder, but it doesn't hurt for just a minute or two. It's also good to do a pressure check at the fuel distro. but, that requires a bit more equipment. Some folks do a permanent gage install there for convenience. Check the forums. MyFastGTI is a good one.
