What would cause a car to stall when going uphill at cruising/idle?

Asked by Justin Jun 07, 2014 at 10:51 PM about the 1986 Ford Thunderbird RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After start up, I put it in drive, take
my foot off brake and let it coast up a
small hill, then stalls.
Smoke tested the car, no vacuum
leaks. Checked plugs, not fouled( oil,
fuel, or coolant) no leaks.

Your tranny has a stall speed and i am guessing that the hill you tried to climb at idle was just enough to make it stall. I would not worry about it if that is the only time it slips. NOW, if you were giving it, say 1500-2000 rpm and it was slipping, you may have bad transmission bands.
