i have a 1997 dodge dakota sport v6 magnum and i try starting the engine it tries to pick up but it wont and i have to get in and hold the gas pedal down a bit until it able to idle on its own

When was the last time you had a tune up and fuel filter. If these are up to date, have your fuel pressure checked.
