5 speed transmission in 1997 dodge dakota

will shift fine for a while then it wont let me shift at all unless the truck is not
moving

Sounds like the clutch is not disengaging. Check the clutch hydraulic fluid.

the clutch seems to work fine at a stand still is that normal ? no grinding or anything like that

I would have to try the clutch to see if it feels normal or not. My guess is that the hydraulic system needs attention but the clutch itself could be going bad. Have a mechanic take it for a test drive.
