1997 dodge Dakota

My son has a 1997 dodge Dakota v8 and the last few months when he goes
to start his truck it goes " tick tick" won't start. After about three times of this
it finally starts up and the truck is fine. Now, today a few months later, it now
take about 20 tries before it will finally fire up. What could this be? We're
thinking starter, battery, or spark plus. I'm limited w/ funds and I don't want to
buy the items if those aren't the issues. I'm hoping someone here can please
help me w/ what issue it may be. Thank you very much for your help. P.s. I
don't know what his "trim" is. I know it's 4wd and extended cab.
