My 204 Ford Escape won't unlock (fob and key don't work)

The last time I entered my car, I used the metal key to get in, and then locked the car
using the door lock button (the one that locks all doors) inside the door.

The battery on m fob was week.

I just tried to get into my car.  When I use the fob, the car has no response.  When I use
the key, I can feel something engage in the door, but I can't open it.

By using the key and then locking the car with the button that locks all the doors, did I
create a situation where I can only re-enter with the fob?  Or is something broken?
