This sounds like the well-documented Transfer Case issue that is common to 2012 and newer Cayennes. You can read all about that issue here: rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/986001-transfer-case.html I've heard that Porsche, in some cases, will do the replacement even out of warranty. Definitely worth pursuing with a Porsche service department.
