My son has a 4wd and a bad transfer case. Can it be bypassed to be only a 2wd ??

No - all the power goes through the transfer case.

you can take one of the drive lines out to make a 2 wheel drive but the transfer case is wear both the drive lines come from so I doubt it would help

It would cost more to repair a transmission because you tried to by- pass a transfer case than it would to just buy a new one.
