Misfire on cylinders 2 and 3 on a 2012 Ford Focus

Asked by Jeff Apr 04, 2022 at 03:59 PM about the 2012 Ford Focus SEL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2012 Ford Focus with misfires on #2 & #3 at highway speeds. It runs
ok at an idle. I doesn't seem to miss on acceleration until you get to about 50
miles per hour at about half throttle. I've moved plugs and coils around and
misfire stays on same cylinders. This is a GDI engine. I have no other codes.
Where should I look for a solution?

Maybe it's the injectors , try some fuel treatment /cleaner , or maybe an intake leak ,

I just drove this while monitoring short term fuel trim. When the check engine light starts flashing to indicate misfire, fuel trim goes to zero. Is this part of the fuel strategy on this vehicle?

OK, Jeff. You've been here long enough to know the routine. First the check; then the answer..... Some people!

OK, check cleared... Direct injection engines that are built by slogs, like Ford, can be problematic. I kinda go along with beatupchevy. Ten years on those high pressure flamethrowers can wear them out, or they could just be dirty/clogged. Or, they might be leaking. Another possibility is valves. Maybe a grind is needed.

direct injection is nothing to play around with. they might need replacing

Jeff, did you ever manage to find the fault? I have something very similar now, although, the OBD scanner does indicate miss fire on idle even, but no engine light. Head was done after an over-heating event, so no chance that the valves, intake flaps are the issue. Injectors, maybe, but was cleaned when the head was re-worked. I suspected the MAF, MAP (in throttle body) and even the O2 sensors. However, they all have reasonable readings and behave as expected. Curious to know what you found and how you resolved your issue....

GuruDZR14Q The customer fixed it themselves when they drove under a truck.
