gear box temp light is on, is it safe to drive car to dealer

I would let it sit over night and drive it slowly when the tranny is cooler. Another option is to call the repair shop. Maybe a tow truck should be used.

I would because it's not like a melt-down will occur, and just how far is it? a forty-five minute stop and start? the dealer will wave his magic wand charge you 450 dollars and spank you on the butt.

If it is any defect that may cause damage the transmission will go into Limp mode,sort of a self preservation,but you should get it checked out.You did not state what the mileage is,it may be covered under a power train warranty.
