Asked by Guru6H4T May 12, 2017 at 09:35 PM about the 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was told the chain assembly is slipping in the cvt and need a new
transmission. Dealer estimate= $9,000. Independent trans. shop = $7,000.
Car in good shape except has 170,000 miles. KBB value in good condition is
$7K. BTW the torque converter was replaced when still under warranty.  TY

Have the head gaskets ever been replaced? If not I would get rid of it. If engine is in really good shape it is a toss up.

Thanks for your responses. Tom- the prices above are for used trans. which is close to the KBB value of the car. yikes.

Really depends on the overall condition of the rest of the car. Look at it this way, getting a new car for $35,000 is almost one half of the cost to repair your car. $3,500 is less than one year of car payments.

Apparently,. a select number of dealerships have replaced the bad torque converter as a gesture of Goodwill.... See this thread, https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discussion-t37876_ds770713

2015 Outback 2.5 Limited owners here,.. our current situation (July-Sept 2019) .. at 86K miles, the transmission begins stuttering/bucking at different speeds, loads and a lot when it's hot... they re-trained. replaced the torque converter, re-trained.. then the FSE claimed it was the upper intake manifold issue... NOTHING HAS FIXED THE SUTTERING PROBLEMS!... so, Subaru America said, they have done all they could.... I protested with a sign and the Subaru Santa Cruz step up and offered to replace with a NEW transmission....(out of their pocket).... well, it still STUTTERS?!?... yeah crazy, makes us think,.. the something is 1: the CVT again or 2: the electronics?

Try replacing the spark plug wires. My 2011 was stuttering on inclines on the freeway, (not in cruise control, and not using gears instead of auto) Mystery to dealership, and everone else-nobody could find out the problem until mechanic kept for a few days and it did it to him.
