A couple of small bolts around the valve cover gasket of my 2007 bmw 525i are loose. Can I replace them without replacing the whole gasket kit?

Yes, assuming the gasket it intact. I think the spec calls for 89 in-lbs (6-7 ft-lbs), but it's not like there is any pressure behind a valve cover gasket. If it leaks any oil just tighten it a little more. Don't over-tighten or you'll strip the stud or deform the gasket. From the manual: "Install 11 bolts w/ washers & grommets at cover perimeter, and 4 bolts/studs w/ washers & grommets at cover center (10mm socket 3/8” / 3/8” ratchet & extension). Tighten bolts/studs evenly working back and forth, assuring even pressure distribution on cover. Tighten until bolts/studs bottom out on head. Fully tighten, 8Nm (6 ft-lb) (10mm socket 3/8” / 3/8” torque wrench & extension)."
