As the owner of several S-Class vehicles currently and previously, I personally, would NEVER own a Mercedes S-class without warranty coverage. When all is right, there is nothing quite like them to drive, BUT, these cars can be high-tech electronic nightmares, that require sophisticated computer and software systems to diagnose and repair problems. Parts tend to be expensive, and you cant' t just take them to a local Pep Boys for repair or even many of the independent Mercedes service centers, they cant justify purchasing all the necessary equipment and computer systems required for these vehicles for the limited number that might actually be brought to them. Also, when purchasing an extended service contract, make sure they cover most items. Also, ask the service department that you'll plan on using which companies they recommend and which companies they use and/or sell. When it comes to getting reimbursement on a claim, its it your service department that controls how they submit a claim to ensure it is covered, one wrong word and they insurance company will deny, I have learned this over the years. Also I advise that you get the longest mileage and duration of warranty that you can afford, as when you are ready to sell, it WILL help in the selling of the vehicle, and many times we keep a car longer than we expect. That being said, the extended service contracts that I have had on these cars have ALL paid for themselves and in some cases several times over. My vehicles were still under warranty when I purchased. so the cost was slightly less at about $5000 for 48 month 100,000 bumper to bumper coverage. I help a friend get on for an out of warranty S600 with low miles for $6800 36 month 100,000 miles. You can find cheaper, just do a search and see what their reputation is on claims. None are perfect, but some are just plain rip-offs!

I currently own a 2004 S500 with 43K miles and in mint condition. It ran out of warranty due to its age and I would like to get onto extended factory warranty. Where do I start?

Vlad. Check with your MB dealer but I seriously doubt they will warranty a 17 year old car but you can always ask.
