I have a 2009 vw jetta and my fan isn't working on any speed. It's not a fuse or the resister.

It's manufacturer's defect...get to the dealer. My Tiguan's fan did the same thing.

What needs to be fixed? And would it be considered a recall? When did it happen to your vehicle?

I'm not sure what you mean by primary and secondary fans.

On the Tiguan, there was a main radiator cooling fan and a smaller, secondary fan...only the smaller one was working and was not enough to support cooling. I'm not sure of the 2009 Jetta configuration...however, it isn't uncommon to have a single, two-speed fan...either way, I'll bet if you put 12V to the fan's connector leads, it won't turn on.

Do you think it's the motor or the switch?

Unsure...but you can bypass the switch and connect 12v and a ground lead (might have to make one from some spare wire) directly to the fan connector leads to see if the fan spins. Incidentally, if the AC is turned on, the fan should kick on...another test to try.

Here's the only diagram I could find on the web... I believe this is the MK5 configuration. Note the fans appear to be replaceable.

Well I won't be trying the wiring and battery. Do you think an electrical diagnosis would help?

Without putting power to the fan itself you cannot verify if its not working...if you could find a good trustworthy mechanic in your local area they could test those for you. did you run the air conditioner to see if the fan came on?

Yes I did, nothing. I know advanced auto parts can do the electrical diagnosis for free. Is it worth it? You work late.. Lol

It will take more testing than an auto parts store will do. If you're trying to do this on the cheap, it won't be easy. The parts to fix will around $200...and a minimum of 2 hours of labor unless you can do the work your self.
