dash board lights

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a small outside temperature reading/trip odometer/ odometer readout on the lower right hand corner of my dash cluster.  The readout is impossible to see at night, and difficult in the daylight.  Is there a light bulb burnt out and how do you get to it?

If it is something that came with the truck and installed by Ford, then there are lights within the cluster which illuminate the gauges. If you pull the cluster, change them all.

is pulling the cluster a DIY type repair or something I should have the dealer do?

I have pulled a few out of explorers to fix the light problem, and it is not a ten minute situation. You will probably have to remove a lot of dash panels to get to the cluster, resulting in a high-ball size glass half filled with screws. Best to tape the screws together and label them so you know where they go when it is time to reassemble. One suggestion, call a local dealership and ask what it cost to replace all the bulbs in the dash. That way you will be able to decide if you want to tackle the job yourself or spend several hundred dollars to have someone else do it.

It's a little complicated, lots of screwing around..lol. If ur not comfortable doing it after watching a few videos on youtube, U may want to have it done in a shop

For giggles, I looked up on the net the procedure for replacing the bulbs on a 2004 through 2008 F-150. The video shows the complete procedure and it is not as bad as I thought. The video runs about twenty minutes. Bottom Panel under the column and top panel over the cluster has to be removed. Bulb replacement involves opening little doors, unscrewing the bulb(s) and replacing. Doable for an average DIYer. It's a youtube video.
