engine whining noise!

Asked by 75vert Jul 16, 2016 at 10:13 PM about the 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche LTZ RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Days after changing the oil on my truck a very loud whining noise started to come from my engine . At first it sounded like if it was the belt and tensioners  but after i change them all the noise still there. After looking and paying attention the i tuck all the belts of and stared the truck and the noise was coming from the crankshaft pulley. could the oil i put on was the cause of these problem put 5W30? thank you!

The oil is not the problem. Is the crank pulley wobbling or is it running straight? Has a rock or other debris got trapped so that the balancer is rubbing on it? It is possible that either the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) has a problem or something is loose in the timing chain area. This may be serious, get it checked out.

the crank pulley is straight and i dont see any debris trap in the harmonic balancer.

Since you took the belt off and started it and the noise sounds like it is coming from the crank pulley this leads me to believe it is something behind the timing cover. This could be the oil pump or related to the timing chain or camshaft. I would have a mechanic take a look at it.
