car wont go over 40mph

My daughter has a 2008 camry 4 cylinder and the check engine light kept
coming on.  autozone did a scan and nothing came up.  she had Meineke do
a scan and still nothing.  then it wouln't start.  A friend changed out the
alternator and replaced the spark plugs.  the car started right up.  But now it
wont go over 40mph and the CEL is still coming on and off intermittently.  
Anyone have any ideas?  Meineke said nothing was wrong, which is
obviously wrong
