battery was not charging due to bad alternator. replaced alternator. now when trying to start the car it starts and acts as if its running out of gas then shuts off. What to do?

Sounds like you got hold of a bad new alternator. Do this test remove belt that goes to alternator if it is a serpentine belt remove it and start vehicle if vehicle runs longer then what it is doing now the alternator is bad.
