My '04 Grand Marquis appears to have a potential electrical issue?

Asked by Dave Aug 19, 2015 at 10:11 PM about the 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis LS Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It started with my fan intermittently turning
on and off. Then today the windshield
wipers started going without me turning
them in and they will not turn off until I shut
off the car and leave it off for a while... Or
when I turn left... They stop then until I go
straight again.

I don't know squat about cars but since I am
broke And cannot afford my local garage or
dealership to fix it, I need help diagnosing
the issue so I can bring it to a friend to fix it.
He just told me that it could be way too
many things causing the issues so I need to
narrow it down before he will even look at it.

I apologize for looking like a complete idiot
but I know nothing about cars. Sorry. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a short somewhere between the steering column and the relays. Inspect the wires brackets and wires to see if there is a loose contact.

First, check the wiring harness to the wiper motor. There's a plug held onto the firewall by a bracket. Mine was burned up, and I think it's common, since it's exposed to so much weather. The Ford dealer tried to say they didn't stock them anymore, but I looked online myself and found it; it will have a pigtail with connectors, but it's easy to replace. I think that was my problem, though we also replaced the wiper motor, and the 'multi-function turn switch' on the steering column.

The turning gives me a clue, There's some brushes and contacts under the wheel. One needs to pull the air bag and the wheel. Could this be it? Usually only cruise control and steering wheel buttons affected, but the turning makes me think. That multifuncion turn switch could be it, also.
