Loud thunk when I come to a stop in my 2001 Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car runs fine and rolls fine, but when I come to a stop I hear (and feel) a loud thunk coming from the rear of the car.  If I brake very carefully, the thunk is less loud.  It feels almost like something is sliding into place (like latching a seatbelt).  Any clues as to what this might be?
