Solenoid is a relay of sorts that uses a small electrical current to control or switch on or off a much larger electric current.

I had the exact same problem with my 03 explorer, OD light on. Since I have a friend who has had a tranny shop for 45 years, he fixed mine. It took him about ten minutes to do the repair. He stated it was a solenoid attached to the tranny. What and where, I do not know.
