how do i find out what gears are in my rear end?

Your VIN number may indicate the gearing to a Ford dealer...Alternately, if your Service Parts label is still on the inside of the driver's doorframe near the latch assembly, it will have a code which can be translated for the rear gears. The only other alternative is to crawl underneath the vehicle and look for a metal tag which is typically affixed underneath one of the differential cover bolts, which will tell the axle code on it. These tags are usually long gone from rust and corrosion, though.
I know how to do it the hands on way with it torn apart but im not sure otherwise...does any know if the ring moves at the same revolutions as the tires? i doubt they do....
well they should on average.. if one wheel is traveling at 90% its speed the other has to turn at 110%, if they dont theirs something seriously wrong...
Jack your car up, and turn the wheel one revolution, count your revolutions of the drive shaft!!! tire one spin/drive shaft 3 3/4, it's a 3.75:1 tire one spin/drive shaft 3, it's 3.00:1 and so on......hope this helps
