I've had this happen when I stopped at a traffic light. My 2007 Chrysler Pacifica shut off in drive but goes in reverse just fine. The problem is common from what I've heard. It is just a little sensor inside the transmission, cost me $20. Simple fix as long as you don't keep trying to put it in drive. If you do, you could end up having to replace the torque converter and axles because you may strip the gears out. Took me 2 hours to fix.
