How to diagnose mess fire on 3

I have a misfire on cylinder 3.. When I
clear codes it goes away for 5 minutes
and comes back. The shop says it's a
collapsed lifter... If this were the case
how would clearing codes allow it to
run smooth for 5 minutes...

On a fifteen year old truck, I'd suspect it's a bad plug/wire/coil, clogged injector, or a compression problem... Not a bad lifter. Get a more proficient mechanic.
