I have heard of a device the hooks to the electrical system during battery replacement. It has a 9 volt battery which prevents the loss of things like the radio presets. Some vehicles need to have their computers reset when the battery is replaced. --- Some Rovers lock the doors when it detects a low battery and it is advised to replace a battery with the drivers door open. http://www.rangerovers.net/rrupgrades/battery.html

I prefer the code savers that hook up to a car battery or plug into another cars cigarette lighter.
