just to cover the basics you checked the fluid right? and is the sound a squeal or is it a whine?
no you may just need a new serpentine belt. i would start with that
no problem at all. i hope it works out for you. if you have multiple belts and changing that one doesn't help try changing the others as well. its your cheapest option and should be your problem. belts start to squeal when they start to wear out and if left unattended they break leaving you without power steering, an alternator to charge your battery, or a water pump to cool your engine. 2/3 will leave you stranded
I had the EXACT problem with my 2007 SL. I was sure it was the power steering pump or belt. Turned out it was an air pump or valve that connects to it. Sorry, I can't find the work order to tell you the exact item to look at. I took it to Mercedes in case it was a simple problem that they would recognize right away rather than risk a lot of labor and unnecessary parts charges at a local mechanic. That turned out to be the right choice.
I have a 2007 ML 320 CDI and I have a load noise that gets loader as you drive faster ,its like a bearing noise ,so I thought it might be the center carrier bearing , but you cant replace them ,you have to buy the hole prop shaft , so I am going to put it up on a two poster and run the jeep up to 60 mph where the nose is worst and try to find the problem ., It could be the transfer box bearing ,plus the chain, or front diff , but I dont heir the noise from the front ,it seems to be in the middle of the car.
