what would cause overheating?

Heater core, could be thermostat, fan relay or fan temp switch , or water pump, if ya get awesome heat from the vents it's not heater core. If ya only get good heat when it's reving could be closed heater core or water pump failing. Check for fan running when it hits a little above operating temp. And make sure your not low on coolant
