My gear stick is completely loose, how do I fix it?

While I was driving I put my car into 5th gear, and
all of the sudden the gear stick became completely
loose. The car remained in 5th gear but I can move
the gear stick around freely even if I don't have the
clutch pressed.

sounds like you either broke the trany or the stick.. its likely something broke off inside the trany since this does not usually happen
