jetta 2000 key wont start

I have 200 jetta I put the key in and shut it off real quick went to turn it on again and does
not turn on, the lights stay on  and for a bit a key with a pad lock was blinking but now its
off. I unplugged the battery and then tried it a agin and still will not turn over
help

I have it unplugged right now because reading it said to leave it unplugged for 8 hours. the key seems very loose when i turn it like it is really loose help
