My 1996 Jetta with auto TM, is rough shifting

Asked by aarnop Aug 04, 2015 at 10:53 AM about the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta 4 Dr Trek Limited Edition Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When starting to drive gears 1-2-3 goes on fairly smooth, but 3-4 has a very sharp jerk. It feels like 2 clutches are on for a short moment before #4 takes over. I have learned to go manually from 3 to 4, at the same time adjusting the engine pull.  Can this be fixed ?

if this is a auto transmission then you either have 1 of 2 issues. Low fluid or the gear is worn out. which means rebuild or replacement. 2000$ repair

Thanks for the info. I was suspecting a worn transmission, too expensive to fix.

well i would suggest checking the fluid levels first since it could jsut be the fluids got low but the reason i say its 2000 is because its roughly 1500$ for the trany it self. If you have a mr transmission near you they could possibly repair it cheaper all depends on what got worn out.
