Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My friend has a BMW X5 3.0I and I just replaced
the variable intake butterfly with a repair kit. The
car started and ran for a few minutes then stalled
out. I have checked the fuel pressure at the
shrader valve and it was fine I am getting good
compression an all 6 cylinders. I did, however, find
out that he is using regular unleaded 87 octane full
when the manual clearly states to use premium
with a 91 or higher octane rating. I am completely
stuck here what do I do to get this car running
again.

First off, you should definitely tell him to switch to premium or mid-grade fuel, regular 87 is not good for these engines. Are there any codes coming up?

Yes random multiple miss fire ( P0300) and then all cylinders miss fire (P0301-306) to lean bank 1 to lean bank 2 something stating that there is an evap system leak LARGE I know that there is carbon build up in the intake manifold I'm wondering if there could be some on the spark plugs I haven't checked yet. We r having a snow storm here in central CT today

I was also thinking of running a high grade fuel system cleaner and carb cleaner to clear out some if the carbon build up would this be a good idea?

I'd definitely check the spark plugs just in case. Fuel cleaner wouldn't hurt either, I recommend Techron Complete Fuel Cleaner. Most BMW guys swear by it!

I'll give it a shot and let you know what I come up with other than completely dropping the tank, due to most newer vehicles having a float ball in the filler neck, do you have any ideas of how to syphon the fuel out to add one with a higher octane rating

Don't worry about getting the old fuel out, adding a good octane booster might help along with the Techron, but there is no reason to take out the gas that's in there. Just make sure from now on, he only uses mid-grade or premium gas.

you should check for vaccume leak specially intake hoses.Have someone run evap smoke test and you will find it.Don't worry about the gas or spark plugs. send me the codes if you need more info
