2000 e320 won't crank at all. Battery good. Is a neutral switch on this car

when you try start the car do you hear a kind of clunk from the engine? It may be a knackered starter motor.

no noise, car was starting fine. went out and no click no noise just as if the neutral safety switch gave out. Is there a switch or does this 2000 model have key communication ????
