99 dodge sport 5.2 over heat

Asked by DewmanG Sep 10, 2016 at 09:07 PM about the 1999 Dodge RAM 1500 ST Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok my 99 Dodge Ram 5.2 sport is over
heating almost 300,000 miles on it.   When
I bout the truck the water pump had been
replaced.  T stat was sticking.  Put in a 195
t stat.   Had headers put on it.  Replaced
the timing chain. At that point the pump
was leaking.  Replaced pump and timing
chain gaskets.  Worked as should temps
stable.  Within a year temps in idle town or
highway would get 210 or above.  I figure
60 mph even if clutch fan was bad would
still stay cooler than 210.  Run heater and
would drop a bit not much.  Replaced t
stay with high flow 165 with bleeder.
Replaced radiator cap.  Replaced heater
core.  Coolant drops when started. Clutch
fan has resistance when cold and less
when warm.  Checking oil tomorrow for
coolant in it.  I know the clutch fan is not
great but feel it is not the main issue.  I
don't smell the sweet antifreeze burnt
smell.  Radiator overflow works as should.

I figured it out there was a bunch of stuff caked in the exterior of the radiator. Cleaned it out and with a high pressure sprayer and temps settled to operating temperature of the t stat.
