I have a 1997 Dodge ram 1500 and it won't shift to
3rd gear unless I let off the gas and press the gas
again and it will shift or it will countiue to rev high
what could cause that

Check the transmission fluid level. Add if low, do not overfill. If fluid is ok it is an internal problem in the transmission, maybe the shift governor or clutches already worn.
