Running rough

Asked by Wvmech Feb 15, 2019 at 12:39 PM about the 2004 Ford F-150 XLT Ext. Cab 4WD

Question type: General

I have an 04 f150 5.4 triton. Starts up but
runs really rough, the tack jumps from 0-1
and the engine shakes when it’s in drive. I
went up a hill today and it was totally gutless
I had the pedal to the floor and it hardly
wanted to go. I put all new spark plugs and
coil packs on it and before it gave the code
cylinder 1 severe misfire before the coil and
plug change. I replaced with a brand new
injector for cylinder 1 and it didn’t help. I’m
lost and need help for every possible issue
that it could be. I have people saying it’s the
intake gasket and others saying it’s the fuel
filter.

It could be something like the catalytic converters plugging up. That creates back pressure that can force EGR to open when it shouldn't and result in misfires for one or more cylinders. I would check for back pressure or exhaust flow before doing anything expensive.
