Starter on a 2003f150

Asked by Shovan2003 Jan 15, 2017 at 03:15 PM about the 2003 Ford F-150 Lariat Crew Cab 4WD SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck would not turn over thought maybe
Battery or starter. Battery is good all connections
are good. Even took off wire for starter and
cleaned it. Still nothing so I jumped starter worked
just fine. Shut off truck waited and didn't start
again. So went and got a starter. Went to pick up
my truck and starts just fine. I have tried starting
seven times now and still works. Is this common
never had this happen before. Thanks in advance

I suspect that the contact inside the solenoid on the starter is starting to get burnt, carbon up. Once you jumped it you put extra juice to it so the magnetic field inside the solenoid that pulls the plunger slammed the contact against the post to make contact. The contact is a round copper disc that will rotate during usage, so it found a cleaner spot to make contact.
