2001 F150 loses acceleration while driving

Vehicle is a 2001 F150, with about 161K miles. Truck will lose acceleration while I'm driving, but the engine continues to run. I lose power steering, gauges drop to zero, and check engine light comes on as though engine has stalled (but again, engine remains running). I then can brake, put the vehicle in park, shut it off, and then it starts right back up and goes. Repair shop replaced the crank position sensor, but the problem still occurs. Sometimes the engine is not entirely warmed up when this happens, but sometimes the engine is warm. Thoughts?

On some Ford models, not sure if your's is one of them, there is an electronic device, name escape me, which controls the fuel pump. It is mounted under the spare tire and bolted/screwed. It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes. They have been known to rust out and fail. Check if you have one. Remove it and see if the zinc plate of the device on the bottom is rusted out exposing the circuitry inside. It has been known to cause the problem you describe.
