service engine light and battery light are on do i have alternator problem

Do your headlights get dim and then brighten up when you bring up the rpms? If so its most likely an alternator, all though an alternator shouldn't cause the check engine light to come on. The best way to check an alternator is to put a voltage meter on it, it should be charging around 14 volts
