If the battery is low on charge and jumped to start the alternator is working overtime and can burn up the internal voltage regulator. Both must be good. If I get a dead battery i have it charged and checked under a load first and check for why it drew down. Removing and checking the alternator as well at the same time off the car is also a good idea but can be tested for output while on the car after battery is charged and good.. If bot check out fine and battery is charged I then check for a parasitic draw..
