when the car was making all kinds of loud banging sounds for about 15 mins after
turning it off, it also had a strong rubber smell and there was some smoke or steam
coming from the coolant tank next to the windshield fluid tub.   then when i tried to

sounds like somethin' done broke! what a wild set of symptoms you describe- the obvious thing is to take it to a good mechanic and no, I have no idea what it will cost to fix- it is a Mercedes, after all- do you have a good Merc mechanic? if you don't it is time to find one you can trust- your car is banging, belching, burning, rising up and down, even when it is turned off? sounds like a job for the Exorcist-
