Does failed or worn out catalytic converter cause the check engine light to

Yes, it can. Go to Auto zone or advanced Auto. They will hook up a hand held scanner and provide you with a print out of the codes that are currently showing in your computer. Also, go on benzworld.org and read in the forums for your code once you get it. This is a free service at the places mentioned above.
