Engine light on in negative temps

Asked by Melody Jan 01, 2019 at 09:12 AM about the 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer LT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck is giving me a steady check engine light,
but seems to sound and handle as normal, as far
as I can tell.

I'm wondering- could this be due to the
temperature? It's about -15° F, with a wind chill
making it almost -30.
Could I just have a frozen sensor, or can these
temperatures cause misfiring and other issues?
This truck is kinda my baby, so I want to fix any
issues ASAP.

It only has 123,000 miles on it and has been very
well maintained its whole life.

Hi Melody, do yourself a favor and invest in a $20 code reader and catch it while the CEL is lit up. Sometimes it will store a code, but I haven't experienced that, gotta catch it while the CEL is lit. With temp related problems, a lot of times, the intake manifold bolts come loose letting air in, then when it warms up, will expand (plastic intake), then light will go off. Certain CEL codes will disable your cruise control also, might be your problem to the other question you asked. When check engine light is not on, the cruise control will work again.
